Can anyone help me find information about Bed and Breakfasts?
Oct 20th, 2009 by admin
I’m doing research for a business class. I need to know on average how much money a Bed and Breakfast near a moderatly visited mountain ski area would make a year? If anyone knows first-hand or a website that might have that kind of information that would be great. Since most B&Bs are run by only a few people and not traded they don’t post their numbers. Thanks!
Google it, Tara.

Most B&Bs don’t make a profit. Most operate to help pay some of their bills. They are Hobby Businesses.

The figures would depend on a number of factors. What you need to do is create a model and go from there. How many rooms? What is included? How much does it cost to keep a guest there one night? How much will the guest pay for that night? What is the rate of occupancy year-round? Peak season? Summer? What does "moderately visited ski area" mean?
You have to define your terms.
The few people that I know who run B&Bs had a good bit of money before opening their establishements. The business operate in the black but are not enormous money makers. Most people who run B&Bs do so for the lifestyle; many of them have come away from high-pressure stress jobs to become innkeepers.
In other words, while a well-run inn would make a profit, the average B&B more than likely comes out just better than even each year.
There are a number of books on how to open and run a B&B and lots of websites:
