Which is better, Quickbooks or Peachtree?

I am planning to use it for accounting of my bed and breakfast business.

I’ve used both and even taken classes on both as part of my accounting degree, and I personally prefer Quickbooks. Better software layout and more intuitive menu commands. Seems like I always had to search around on Peachtree for commands that should have been easy to find, which was frustrating, to say the least.

Some people claim that QB is ‘buggy’, i.e. has lots of software glitches. I personally have never had any problem with it. It’s always been a stable and reliable program for me – and I’ve been using it for over 20 years (through various upgrades).

I need to find info on how to get trained in the business with options to buy out owners or take over while on vacation. I live in Michigan. Any help would be great.

What is the nearest B & B to your residence. Go to them and see if they are hiring for this season. If they are not, keep checking around until you get in to one. You might also want to consider taking academic training in the hospitality industry to go along with your hands on experience. Canadore College in North Bay, Ontario has an excellent programme. http://www.canadorec.on.ca/ You might be able to find one in Michigan also.

Is this a realistic American family?

Here’s my story
Father is the first born and his father lives with the family. They both a run a hotel business/bed & breakfast thing together.
Mother is a house
-two children, a son & a daughter
no pets
Mother is close to both her children but favors son.
Children are discipline physically for bad grades & bad behavior.
This is just a simplistic summary of the family life.
Anyway, most of the family is average looking, except for the daughter, she is supposed to be really pretty.
She is not treated differently because it.
Anyway, does this family sound cliche?
What should I change about her family?
How does this family sound crazy?
I do not have pets and I am American

Sounds regular to me.

It’s good parents treat children with discipline physically for bad behavior. Sometimes the only way to teach em to never do it again is the belt. Remember in school they would slap you on the wrist if not obeying.

No pets is fine. Maybe one of the children are allergic to pets.

is renting rooms out by the week illegal?

someone at my job who also owns a bed and breakfast business told me that in order to rent housing for less than a month, you are supposed to have a special kind of license, but i see people leasing out rooms by the week on craigslist all day. i don’t get it.

This is a law that is passed by the city or county that you are located in. In many areas any motel or such can do this- or maybe even homeowners. In my area we are going to have the Super Bowl in 2011 and people are talking about renting their homes out for that week for large amounts.

It all just depends on what your local laws are.

When I win the HGTV dream home I want to use it for a non-profit "business" would my taxes be different/less?

When I win I would like to make it a "free" bed and breakfast style home for children with cancer (and their families) a place where they could come and stay and my family would cook and clean and teach them to snorkel, swim, surf…whatever they want to do before they are too ill to do it. I plan on getting grants and donations to support it….my question is would my taxes be different (lower hopefully)??? I want to plan now— the drawing is only a month away!

Well, I am not really sure, most non-profit businesses pay no taxes, but property etc., not sure. But, Good luck in the drawing anyway, that is a wonderful gesture if you win.

I’m thinking of starting such a business and would appreciate anyone giving me some advice as I’m a total beginner. Many thanks for the info.

Get experience in running a hotel, B&B or motel first. Get experience in a comercial kitchen second.

When you are ready to open your Bed & Breakfast, find a good location. Not too secluded that people can’t find it, but not so touristy that you have a million competitors too. You want some sort of attraction to draw people to the area (historicly or naturally significant).

I’m doing research for a business class. I need to know on average how much money a Bed and Breakfast near a moderatly visited mountain ski area would make a year? If anyone knows first-hand or a website that might have that kind of information that would be great. Since most B&Bs are run by only a few people and not traded they don’t post their numbers.
