Is it better to eat breakfast before I run?
Jan 4th, 2010 by admin
I’ve been very unhealthy lately.
I’ve been getting an average of 4 hours of sleep a night, skipping breakfast, eating nothing but junk food (even meals have been pizza or chinese or cheeseburgers), and I’ve been stressing over homework. I’m trying to get out of this, and so I’m going to bed early tonight and I’m going to go running tomorrow morning before I shower and everything. I’d like to go before I eat breakfast, but I’m not sure if that’s a good idea. Is it better for me to eat and then run or run and then eat (keep in mind I’ll be running at about 6 AM)?
I had this same problem for years. I’d run before breakfast even though you’re not supposed to because you won’t have adequate energy. I couldn’t eat before I ran because it upsets my stomach. Now I’m studying nutrition and exercise science and it’s true, you do need to eat something before you work out. So you can just eat a tiny bit. Like, a handful of dried fruit and nuts. Or a cup of orange juice or a few grapes and crackers. Eat the little bit of food before you get dressed or while you’re getting dressed. That way you have energy but your stomach will feel ok.
I don’t-I think it slows me down to have food in my tummy…

it depends
are you hungry when you wake up? because if so, then i would suggest eating.
but if not, you are probably better off running first because that will allow you to sleep longer(if you eat first you will want to wait a little bit before running)good luck and congrats on trying to be heathier:)

Its better to eat before u go. Just try to eat something healthy, like a couple of bananas or grapes. Get some water too, and maybe bring like an energy bar with u just in case u get hungry.

with no food it will be hard for your body to wake up so i would say from person experience a light breakfast like waffles would be good before u run but if u eat something like a doughnut before u run, it would have a bad effect so it all depends on what u plan to eat for breakfast

It depends on what your breakfast consists of, I would say. If it has a lot of liquid, I’d abstain from eating it until after you run. However, I think it’d be best to eat before if you can, since your body needs the energy from food to keep going.

I agree that it might be harder for you to run after eating, but as long as you get some sort of breakfast in you’ll be okay. It is the most important meals of the day!

When you begin a run, you should feel neither starved nor stuffed. You don’t want to eat immediately before running because it may lead to cramping. Running on an empty stomach may cause you to run out of energy. You best bet is to eat a light snack or meal about 1 1/2 to 2 hours before you start running.
Choose something high in carbohydrates and lower in fat, fiber, and protein. Some examples of good pre-workout fuel include: a bagel with peanut butter; a banana and an energy bar; or a bowl of cold cereal with a cup of milk. Stay away from rich, very fatty, or high-fiber foods, as they may cause gastrointestinal distress .

Some people get cramps, faint, or throw up if they eat before they run. Others don’t. Just eat something light like an apple or a bowl of cereal before you run, and eat your real breakfast after.

not right before. you wanna eat and then have it settle and then run. don’t wanna have not eating for a while before running or have just gotten done eating. right in the middle is where you wanna be

Well my trainer always told me to eat after I worked out. That way your metabolism will burn the calories you eat and it’s less likely to ’stick to you’ especially if you eat something healthy.
